Cub Master Corner (Joel Hopper)

It's that time of year again Scouts. Time for winding down the school year and the Scout year as well. But it's very important that you remember to work on your new skills you got in school by practicing them during the summer.

Reading books is a great way to practice that skill.

As Scouts we need to remember that some of the skills we learn need practicing too. Tying knots, whittling, pitching tents, cooking. Lots of different tasks might be difficult now, but after practicing, you'll wonder why you couldn't do it sooner.

Also, remember that just because the Scouting year is winding down doesn't mean that our activities will stop for the summer. Watch the website for updates to the calendar of events. While we have not quite finalized the dates for the summer activities, we have a lot planned. The first thing that we do to begin the end of the season is to have our annual Crossover where we move up in rank in Scouts. We get new books with new skills, new neckerchiefs, new uniforms in some cases. We also get new leaders for some of the leadership roles in the pack.

I know I had fun as Cub Master. I hope you give Mr. Jeff the same respect you showed me. He will need your help to make sure that the next year for Pack 978 is as good as this one was.

Cub Master Joel

From Our Outings Chairman (Trey Saunders)

The Pack campout at McKinney Falls has been canceled. The weather looks like Austin will be having sever thunderstorms this weekend and we would hate to travel that far for a wet weekend of camping. We will be starting to plan next falls campouts very soon so if you have any recommendations, new or old places please let us know.

From Our Pack Chairman (Rob Miller)

It's already the end of April, where has the time gone? Scout Fair - GREAT JOB! All those who supported the Pack 978 booth had a blast. The boys had a blast. Also, Pack 978 won the Blue Ribbon for 1st place for Safest Site at Scout Fair 2006. We should all be proud of our leaders and boys who earned this award.

We have the following events coming up so be ready to have fun:

  • Scouting for food— The local food pantries are low and in need of donations. Each Den will be assigned an area to hand out bags with flyers. Then Sat. 4/6 the dens will collect any bags with food and turn them in to the food pantry on Huffmeister Rd.
  • Crossover - The boys have worked hard this year and are ready to move on to start working towards the next rank. May's crossover is were the boys get their books and neckerchiefs so they can start work over the summer on their next rank.
  • Day Camp - The boys that have signed up for day camp will have a great time working towards that next rank. This is a great time and place for the boys to get a jumpstart on those advancement activities.
  • Summertime Activity Award - During the summer the Dens and Pack will sponsor activities over the summer so the boys can continue having fun. The boys need to attend 3 of these sponsored activities to earn the summertime activity award. Day camp does count for 1 activity. More will be noted when we get the final events scheduled from the den leaders.

As we begin to wind down the year we will be approaching many of you to ask for volunteers for next year. Many of the committee positions will be empty next year and we need to fill them soon. Come on out and volunteer, you don’t have to be an experienced scout leader to help. You will be surprised with how much fun it really is working with the Pack.

Yours in Scouting,

Rob

WDYB Camp (Gary and Wayne)

April 8th weekend the WEBELOS attended the District WEBELOS Do You Best camp. The boys had a blast working on WEBELOS achievement pins, shooting BB guns, climbing a boulder wall and walking across rope bridge. The Dragon Patrol brought home 1st place for having the best Cheer at Camp. Thank you to Les Wright (Panther Patrol), Wayne Hancy (Panther Patrol), Phillip Blatzheim (Panther Patrol), and Joel Hopper (Panther Patrol) for stepping up to help Becca in the areas of staff she was short handed with. Pack 978 stepped up again making WDYB a great camp for all the boys in the Rising Star District.

Summertime Activities (could be you) The Pack is in need of someone to coordinate the summertime activities this year. This person does not have to schedule the events. Each den will be sponsoring an activity. The summertime activities chairperson coordinates them and communicates the events. This person also gets the sign-up sheets from the events and compiles the attendance for the awards chairperson to award the summertime activities award. This award is given to a scout who has attended 3 or more summer events.

Dens start thinking about what event(s) you want to sponsor and when. If you can help please let Rob Miller and/or Courtney Cravin know ASAP.
