WEBELOS To Scout Expo. Oct 21 to 23: (Matt Sellers)

This past weekend 5 of Pack 978’s Webelos attended WTSE which is an opportunity for the boys to hone their outdoor and camping skills. WTSE is a great way for our boys to see what Boy Scouts is like. They were given the chance to visit with several Scout Troops and interact with Boy scouts, enhancing the transition to Boy Scouts. We were very proud of our boys as they planned the campout on their own, from getting all the gear together, preparing a shopping list for food, cooking the food and setting up camp. The Dads sat back and let the boys run things.

WEBELOS Camp Weldon. Oct 14 to 16: (Wayne Hancy)

Troop 626 invited the WEBELOS of Pack 978 to join them on what they call Camp Weldon. This is the Scout Master property in Columbus, TX the Troop camps at every year. At camp the boys work on skills like, fishing, hiking, first aid, knots, compass and fire building. Don’t worry handing 9 year olds matches is not really that scary. They were supervised by the older Boy Scouts. Now that is the scary part. 2 boys from the Panther Patrol were able to attend. 10 Boys From Pack 1999 (2nd year WEBELOS) from Polaris District also attended. Lets just say our 1st year WEBELOS held there own in the competitions. The camp is semi-primitive, but our first year WEBELOS did great. We didn’t catch dinner, but that was ok as the Troop provided us Dinner and it was great. This was a great event and we hope we get to attend again next year.

Cub Master Corner (Joel Hopper)

Anybody here want to know how to catch a monkey? Well, I can tell you how they do it in India. They take a gourd, cut a small hole in it, and then put some rice inside. Then they tie the gourds down securely and wait for the monkey. Monkeys are greedy and selfish. I guess you could say anybody who is greedy and selfish is a monkey. Anyway, monkeys are so greedy and selfish that they fall for the gourd trick every time. The monkey sticks his paw into the gourd to get the rice. He grabs a handful - but then he can't get his hand out of the gourd. His fist won't go through the small hole. And he's so greedy and selfish that he won't let go of the handful of rice. He just waits there with his greedy fist wrapped around the rice until the men come and take him. Well, you've got the moral to this story: Don't be greedy and selfish or you may make a "monkey" of yourself.

Some Words From Our Outings Chairman (Rob Miller)

There are several ways you can help the Pack. While the Committee Chair and Secretary and Charter Organization Rep positions still need to be filled. There are other ways you can help. Here are a few ideas.

Fundraiser Chairperson

Coordinate with the Pack and District to raise money for the pack through Pack and District sponsored fundraising programs. (Cake Bake, Popcorn, Scout Fair)

Race Chairperson

Pack Secretary

Coordinates information (e.g. committee meeting minutes, etc) and communicates it via the Pack newsletter, Scout Track Email, and if needed by phone.

These are just some positions needing to be filled. There are many others. If you can help support the Pack please contact the person currently responsible or the committee to volunteer.
